Philly Lutaaya; a Ugandan music icon who was born on October 19, 1951. Begins

his music career as a teenage passionate guitarist in the Ugandan army band in the

1970s before pursuing a solo career. Lutaaya is known for his socially conscious lyrics

addressing issues like poverty, corruption, and drug abuse. He becomes one of

Uganda’s most popular and respected musicians in the 1980s, singing in both English

an Luganda. In 1983, Lutaaya publicly announces that he is HIV positive, becoming

one of the first public figures in Uganda to do so. He continues to perform and raise

awareness about HIV/AIDS until his death from AIDS-related complications in 1989 at

the age of 38.

In this remote village, menstruation is a very sensitive topic and it’s kept secret to only girls. When Joan approaches adolescence, her mother organizes a private meeting with her. At the bonfire, the mother informs her daughter about the scary phenomenon about to happen to her body.

At school, Joan is a happy young girl. She had been taught how to monitor her period, but unfortunately, she was so busy with school and didn’t care to watch it. On a sunny morning, Joan and her friends are having a happy breakfast out in the compound, seated on top of desks, talking and laughing when she has her first period.From a distance, boys notice Joan’s heavily stained skirt. Joan whispers to her girlfriend about what just happened. The girl swiftly puts off her sweater and tries to protect Joan by covering her back. The group of boys run to the girls laughing and giggling. The rest of the girls protect her, covering her away from the scene.

The boys swam around and start yelling at Joan. “Full moon girl, don’t run.”, We see that the desk is stained with blood. One of Joan’s girlfriends picks leaves from the tree branches and cleans the desk. The boys keep giggling and laughing at the girls as they take to the makeshift washrooms.

The boys tell the whole school about the incident, and the ignorant students make fun of her for the rest of the term, giving her the nickname LUNAR, This is the last term Joan attended any school.
